History of the Stewart United Methodist Church

1884-2006

On July 31, 1884, Charles and Sarah Stewart deeded one acre of land for use of the Stewart Union Church. Mr. Stewart erected a one-room structure that is the sanctuary of the present day church building. Baptists, Methodists, and Presbyterians in the area made a unique arrangement as to the co-operate use of the building. The Presbyterians were the first to discontinue worship as a group. The Baptists acquired land on Alabama Highway 60 and built Stewart (Concord) Baptist Church in 1960. Since then, the Methodists have had full use of the building and that is when it became known as Stewart Methodist Church. The church was incorporated in 1996.

In 1936 two classrooms were added to the one room structure. During the 50’s, four more classrooms were added. Major projects were completed in 1969-70. Changes included a heating/cooling system, kitchen added, two indoor restrooms, and a bored well. During 1984-86 remodeling ceiling and lights in sanctuary, carpeted, painted and installed new lighting in classrooms. Other extensive renovations were completed in 1996. These were: addition of 1000 sq. feet (new nursery, storage room, ladies restrooms, and doubled size of Fellowship Hall), established a library/work room, remodeled kitchen, developed a playground, back porch, new heating/cooling system in classrooms, steeple on sanctuary, sound system/speakers for entire church. In 1997 the old Stewart/Havana charge parsonage was sold to Glenn and Shelly Allen.

At one time, Stewart was part of the charge that served Stewart, Akron, Havana, China Grove and Flatwoods churches. After then Stewart and China Grove became satellite churches of the Moundville UMC sometime in the 1970’s.

Yearly goals are set and achieved by the church as a whole, involving as many members as will participate. We have celebrated Homecoming services in August of each year since 1974. We have an annual Revival and Bible School, an active adult choir,. MYF and Sunday School classes for all ages. Worship services are held at 9:00A.M. each Sunday.  Sunday School classes meet every Sunday at 10:15. All apportionments are accepted and paid, and we strongly support the Children’s Home. We have dedicated members, both young and old, who are concerned about each other. With God as our leader, we try to combine the experience and wisdom of older members with the enthusiasm and dedication of younger members to cement the unity of our church.
